But in 1987 Reagan issued an executive order, in spite of the law, that allowed illegal/undocumented family members of those granted or eligible for amnesty to also stay. It was significant because many men had come here illegally to work and then brought their wives and children "later." The wives and children didn't qualify for amnesty, and faced deportation.
