Cheverly is simply an amazing community. My husband and I grew up in Bethesda and Chevy Chase, and I've lived in Madison, Wisconsin (5 years) and Austin, Texas (9 years). While I feel fortunate to have lived in some really great places, Cheverly is hands-down the best place I have ever lived. As others have already stated, it's a leafy residential community that is just minutes from downtown DC. I work at Foggy Bottom and take the orange line metro to work every day - super convenient since the Cheverly stop is on the orange line. It's incredibly safe. We let our 9 year old ride her bike around town and walk to the nearby playground unaccompanied without a second thought. It's the kind of place where you know all of your neighbors and everyone looks out for each other. People bring you meals for weeks after you have a new baby, there's always someone willing to shovel your walk, give you a ride, or watch your kids in a pinch. People are active here - there's a running club and an amazing community swim & racquet club (with clay tennis courts!) When Cheverly residents see a need, they just make things happen. We have an incredible community farm market, yoga classes, an annual "Cheverly Day" celebration with fireworks that rival the ones downtown, a Turkey Trot 5K and 1K Fun Run/Walk, an annual food truck festival, Free Little Libraries, a brand new amazing playground... all right here in our neighborhood. The neighborhood public elementary school is excellent, and the principal and teachers are top-notch. (Bonus: We can WALK our child to school.) Even if we eventually felt we needed to do private school in the middle/high school years, I would much rather live here and pay tuition than move. It's true that we don't have the cute shops and restaurants that Bethesda and Alexandria have. That said, I can hop in my car and be at Eastern Market or on H Street in 10 minutes. Wegmans - the best grocery store EVER - is also just 10 minutes away. Hyattsville (5 minutes away) has Busboys and Poets, and Whole Foods and Pizzeria Paradiso are coming. We're 5 minutes from canoe rentals, a rowing club, and the best walking and cycling trails around... and far less crowded than Crescent Trail! In a nutshell, coming from a girl who was born and raised in MoCo: I'd take Cheverly over MoCo anyday.
