I thought about this. Long sleeve button down, polo shirt??? And then I realized that that's not what he wears to school every day. He wears his batman shirt, or his running shirt, or his striped shirt. So I let him dress himself. I think on picture day he was wearing a blue/blue striped shirt. You know what....that's who my kid is right now.
That's my philosophy too. My DD's preschool had a dress-up picture day, where the company brought in "fancy clothes" and had the kids dress up and take pictures. She chose a goofy teal princess dress and mismatched bow, but she had such a great smile in the pictures that I had to buy them. It's a good representation of her personality and interests at this age. I'd probably avoid any t-shirts with words or big character graphics, just because they're distracting and usually don't photograph well, but really those are my only restrictions (and if one of my kids REALLY wanted to wear one of those things, I'd let it go.)
