Safeway, recently sold, is in the middle of a corporate retrenchment. Rather than invest in smaller city stores, they evidently have decided to consolidate and drive traffic to oversized suburban super enters like the one built in north Georgetown. They then don't want a new store coming in to property they've owned and compete for customers in their "territory." Once the giant Giant opens at Wisconsin and Macomb it would not surprise if Giant starts to close smaller stores like VanNess. Personally I think that 60,000 + sq ft "back-the-SUV-up " "suburban megastores are out of place in the DC market, but this is the one-size-fits-all model that Safeway and Giant seems to have invested in. So it's logical that they want to drive traffic to them, even if it means shrinking their smaller store footprint.[/quote]
