It's like a Sherlock Holmes meets CSI and MacGyver set in the Victorian era.  The police detective Murdoch applies new techniques of crime solving like taking finger prints and invents a scientific gizmo every episode.  The sprinkle in historical figures like Arthur Conan Doyle, Tesla.  They pay close attention to details and language of the day, and all the technology is relevant to scientific discoveries of the day.  Of course, they take creative license with everything he invents.

It's on Amazon Prime, so you could probably watch a couple episodes and see if he'd like it.  I was slow to warm up to season 1 but I ended getting hooked at watching all the episodes available on Prime.
