I don't tip unless there is exceptional service.
Seriously? If you have repeat services do workers turn away when they see you coming?
Nope! The service does not change. When I do tip I actually tell them that the service I got was exceptional which is why I am tipping them. BTW, I do the same with hairdressers and most others. My one exception is servers in a restaurant who I know count on tips as part of their income. I think tipping is out of control with tipping being the norm for just about every service. I have seen threads where tips are being given to house cleaners, movers, hotel housekeeping, routine deliveries, etc. I will always tip for exceptional service no matter who it is but not because they are just doing their job.
Are you saying that you don't think hairdressers count on tips as part of their income? More importantly, why wouldn't you tip a hotel housekeeper? They deal with your waste and bodily fluids for all of $8 an hour.
So does the trash collector and I don't tip him other than leaving him something at Christmas ...... or my house cleaner who does the same work as housekeeping at a hotel. I don't tip the people who clean my yard even though they have grass clippings and other allergens coming into contact with them because of the nature of their work. Besides, hotel housekeepers make more than $8 per hour. You may want to check out what they actually make on average. But more to the point, I don't feel a need - and will not - tip people who are merely doing their jobs for which they are being paid.
