Hey folks- many roads have not been treated at all. East -West highway is scattered with cars that did 180's. We turned around our 4 wheel drive after cars around us slid out of control and into each other. I am sure if this was December schools would have been delayed or cancelled -- pressure not to cut into vacation days is understandable, but dangerous. This is the first time this New England family though road conditions were too poor to drive at 7:15 am
It might be a version of "all politics is local" -- if the temp is a few degrees warmer in DC (as it generally is), and the roads are fine near the people in DC (including school administrators), it is hard to picture that the road conditions are that poor just 5-10 miles further out. I'm a transplanted New Englander as well (and know how to drive in snow, although it's harder without the snow tires of my youth), and agree that the road conditions are actually quite bad and that a light car without heavy tread tires will not be able to make it up a hill of reasonable grade that has been untreated. Saw a lot of evidence of this so far this morning.
