Robert R. Gray was nominated by the Maryland State Department of Education based on student performance on the state assessments. The Seat Pleasant school, which receives federal Title 1 funds to help disadvantaged student meet academic standards, is one of two to receive the recognition. New Song Academy in Baltimore also received the national distinction.

The schools were honored by the U.S. Department of Education during a ceremony in California this week.
