People, let's not promote the designer breeds (that is, mutts). There are PLENTY of designer breeds (that is, mutts) at the animal shelters. Please save a life. A dog is NOT an accessory. You are NOT Paris Hilton.
But when you want a particular mixed breed, it's no different from wanting a particular pure breed. I agree with you that most people should adopt rather than go to a breeder, but I wouldn't single out designer breeds as being any more ludicrous than pure breeds.
There are only 2 ways I'd get a dog. Either adopting a dog in need of a home, from a shelter or rescue or a person who needed to rehome due to difficulty, or from a top quality breeder. By top quality, I mean a breeder who raises dogs to show, keeps them with their family, and only occasionally breeds as a way to further the breed and find their next show dog. I'd want a breeder who bred at most once or twice a year, who had a small number of dogs, who interviewed me at length, and who made me swear up and down that I would return the dog to them if something happened. Designer "breeds" take the show dog part out of the occasion, and make it more likely that you'll get a dog that has passed down negative traits. In addition, many designer dog breeders are in it for the profit, which leads to larger number of dogs and puppies than they can include in their family, and puts the dogs at risk for other types of cost cutting like keeping them confined in cages. It's possible that you can find a designer dog breeder who takes all the same precautions as a top AKC breeder, but I think it's challenging. When someone posts that they want a goldendoodle or a cava-poo or whatever, people often reply with websites, but when you go to those websites they're full of red flags.
