Your 7th grader should be training for MathCounts and AMC8 and reading math and science books for fun. If it's not fun for them and they did not get picked for the math team, maybe rethink TJ?
My child was a great math and science student, did not do the above activities but was a high achiever in a sport. Did not prep for the test, had no help with the SIS and had straight As in AAP classes while spending many after school hours practicing a sport. Has a great GPA at TJ while still spending a lot of hours on a sport. We've seen a lot of kids in the same class year have to leave the school because they just couldn't keep the GPA necessary to stay there, even with tutoring outside of school. TJ should be something kids want to and can do on their own.
