Really, it just looks like dirt mixed with fireplace ashes, and if you hold the container open and scatter while looking the other way, it'll probably go fine, and over before you know it. I also think the woods is a fine alternative- maybe you stand on a path or something and shake/ scatter into the side bushes/ plants? I don't think anyone is going to say anything to you.
