One late cc payment knocked my wife's score from 820 to 710. But that wasn't her fault as the cc company had added her as a responsible party to her mother's account without telling her.
How does that happen? My mother was suddenly added to a store account I have. I am over 50 and don't need my mother on an account I've had for 20 years. I called them and had it fixed but they couldn't tell me why she had been added. My mother doesn't shop at this store so I'm sure she didn't request it. And even if she had why would a CC company just add a user and send a new card without telling the account holder?
It was a store account. MIL has dementia. Wife was trying to handle her affairs and has POA. Rather than respect the POA and tell her the payoff, the issuer just added her as a responsible party. Wife paid off the card but apparently there was residual interest. But she didn't see (nor was she looking for) a bill, which came addressed to her mother, so the $5 or whatever didn't get paid, and they reported it and my wife's credit took a big hit for the only derogatory item on her credit in her entire credit history. Seriously, more than 100 points. Fun times trying to unwind that one. I threatened to sue them for libel. Might still do it.
