Here's how it works, using nice round numbers. Right now we are close to the spring equinox, a week from today. That would be 12 hours of daylight. Under ET, that would be (more or less) 6 am to 6 pm. With DST, it's closer to 7 am to 7 pm. For me, it's definitely preferable to have the extra hour of daylight at dinner time rather than before I get out of bed. And in three months, at the summer solstice, we get about 15 hours of daylight, which would be around 4:30 am to 7:30 pm under EST or 5:30 am to 8:30 pm -- I definitely prefer the latter, and would be happy to shove another half hour or hour of daylight from am to pm. Super DST, anyone?
Why would you rather have daylight till 8:30? I'd rather be able to put he kids to bed when it is dark. Summer is so hard to put them to bed when the sun is still shining brightly! I hate the sudden change. I love the gradual lengthening of daytime in the spring months. But that's gradual, it is easy to deal with. It's the sudden change that is so hard on our family. And is seems pointless.
