I work part-time - 30hrs/wk, in the office one day and the rest from home. For me, working PT is ideal. My job is very fulfilling, I don't think I'm cut out to be a SAH mom, and we need the money - but I have that extra time to spend with my kids, and the work week is that much less stressful for everyone. My kids and i have leisurely mornings together before preschool drop off and time in the afternoon to run errands, prep dinner, or do something fun. That said, we take a big financial hit due to my PT schedule - not just bc I work fewer hours, but because I'm wedded to a organization that pays poorly. It's a trade off we are willing to make now, and one that I will probably continue to make through the ES and MS years since I can really see the value in being home when the kids get done with school. I'm lucky that while my job pays poorly, they make up for it with their flexibility. I've continued to move up the ladder despite my PT schedule and even those at the top often telecommute or work a reduced schedule. I think that can be hard to find. I've thought about looking for a new job, but figure I'll probably have to put in my time as a full timer before I can push for a PT schedule somewhere new. For the right job, I'd do it, especially if PT was a possibility for the future - but given the benefits of my current position, I'm most likely staying put for awhile. It's been my experience that its much easier to negotiate a PT schedule when you've already proved your worth than to find a new PT gig.
