You are divorced? If the environment is truly unsafe, you need to document so you can get full custody and/or court-ordered parent training for the parent who needs it. What's a mediator going to do for you? If the two of you were good at communicating, you wouldn't be divorced. The people I know who are in high-conflict divorces (and aren't taking each other to court all the time) stick to their custody plan religiously and only communicate via text.
Mediation is often required as part of the parenting plan or other agreements. Court expects you to start there.
If a situation is truly unsafe - and I do mean actually unsafe - a court will issue an emergency order to protect the child. There will be time for the other parent to overcome the order and retain custody, but if the child is unsafe the courts are who can help in the immediate term to keep the child safe, and then things can progress through mediation/parent coordination/etc while the other parent makes the changes required so the child will be safe.
