My K daughter did it in the fall in FCC. It was wonderful, she loved it (and so did I). The two parents who coached her team were great - one played college soccer, he seemed to know what he was doing. More importantly, they were amazing with the kids - so encouraging to all of them and also got them to really work! I didn't see any internal issues with families, it was fun to hang out and chat with neighbors and get to know some of the parents from my daughter's new school. She's doing it again in the spring... The only bad part is that when you sign up, you dont' know what day/time the weekly practice will be (there is one weekday practice and one Saturday game each week). They are either at 5 or 6, so that can be difficult if you are trying to arrange getting home from work.
I meant to say they both knew what they were doing (just that the head one seemed to have a really strong soccer background). Also, I think that the soccer skills that are taught to K and 1st graders isn't rocket science. My daughter had previously taken a few years of soccer from an organization with paid soccer coaches (when she was 3-5 yo), the parent coaches were even better (maybe just because the kids were older and could do more, plus they had more time - an hour of practice and also a game each week). Although I'm sure your mileage may vary!!
It may look to you as they know what they're doing however, you don't teach young kids the same way as you would in college. Somebody may have lots of personal soccer experience, but methodology behind it. I have seen parents teaching 3-4 group how to pass a ball--an utter nonsense at that age which does not have yet proper preparation. You need to know about early childhood development have proper methods, otherwise you may as well train in your backyard. Another categorical mistake is to have very young kids to play games. You can so easily discourage a young child for life!
