Open a credit card which gives you travel points and spend the required about, then buy tickets for points. Google flights will show you the cheapest days, it’s usually Wednesday and Tuesday. Don’t overthink it, just buy your tickets (avoid basic fares, buy the second cheapest) and go.
Worst advice ever. Especially for a retiree whose income will now be fixed for the rest of their lives. Not to mention that trying to get a ticket with points has become ludicrously out-of-reach. C'mon .... Tens of thousands of points for one lousy ticket? It's just not worth wasting a minute of life on that stuff. Same goes with hotel rooms. I had more than 30 days of stay in one hotel chain and all I was eligible for was a slight discount ONE TIME. OP, the best thing to do is be flexible with your days, times and airport selections. For example, instead of flying into Chicago O'Hare you can look at flying into Rockford. Look at secondary airports near the location you want to go to.
