How much sunlight is it under? Japanese maples can get sunburned and start to die as a result. They also are a thirsty tree. I suspect there is some sort of tree thing going around that affects japanese maples. They haven't looked good since last summer.
Not OP, and mine is doing well. It is in shade much of the day.
Ours was doing amazingly in full shade for all but the first 2 hours when the sun was rising. It was lush, vibrant and healthy with no attention. We had to cut down the big shade tree last spring due to dead hollow branches falling, which put the maple in full sun the entire day. It slowly started withering and losing leaves, especially the parts that are under full sun the entire day like the top. The arborist pointed out the discoloration of the sun facing branches vs the insides tgat face away fro. The sun. It literally looks like the outer sun faced areas have been scorched, like the skin of an old person who spent the 1980s in tanning beds. We are trying to save it, by treatment from tge arborist, watering frequently, and using shade blankets. It seems the new damage is halted, but it definitely does not look healthy. I hope we can save it. It's a beautiful tree.
