We went to a party like this in preschool. The parents had already paid to rent out the entire place and they just dropped off cupcakes. It was a bummer but all the kids had fun.

I would word it like "Katie is sick, she won't be at the party's but since we already paid and reserved the venue, we would love for guests to still attend and enjoy."

I would expect that people will not bring gifts, but you could swing by afterwards to pick some up just in case people do bring them.[/quote]
