Honestly, I think such essays don't serve to give the admissions committee a good feel for who a student really is, so I'm surprised any schools still have such a topic. OP, sorry that your DS didn't get into UMD. There are some fine schools in the South, though, and the merit aid DS has been offered sounds like a plus. I hope he'll be happy wherever he attends.
