What I’ve had to come to terms with is that being good at school, and liking school, isn’t critical. It doesn’t need to happen in order for a child to be wonderful, worthy, accomplished, and confident. Sometimes you need to keep your foot on the gas with tutoring/remediation while acknowledging that school is mostly a load of horse manure. Who cares if they memorize the 50 states, or can spell well? There is technology for that. It can help to simply affirm that, while holding firm that society requires us to go to school and learn stuff, so we do.

It’s a struggle - mostly as a parent who wants your child to love reading, thrive in class, etc. The thing I’ve found is that if you do meet the kid where they are and support the things they DO love (soccer, horses, karate, art, whatever) they have more strength for doing the terrible hard parts of school. They become resilient.

My son is enjoying his college classes for the most part. He gets to pick a course of study, and that matters so much. He has been slower to mature educationally than non dyslexics, but he’s gotten there and is thriving. I’m sure your daughter will too.[/quote]
