Can we separate discussion of the Israel is going in Lebanon from Iran? While I know the IDF's party line that they have to attack Hezbollah (extra stress on the "z" to make them sound scary) in "defense" and that any civilian killed is the sole fault of Hezbollah (despite it being US weapons fired and IDF doing the firing), over 100 kids have been killed in the last few days, plus 2 professors at Beirut University (which is was a beautiful and tranquil campus when I visited in 2003), plus hundreds of others. My basic understanding is that when Israel did not allow the Palestinians to return home after the Nakba, many thousands ended up as refugees in Lebanon. They were angry and launched attacks on Israel from Lebanon. The Lebanese civil war was triggered when half the country supported this retaliation and 1/2 did not. Once that was settled Hezbollah was established (funded and armed by Iran) and the Lebanese let them stay as a deterrent to Israel again invading. Over the years Hezbollah has fired into Israel while Israeli religious crazies have talked about extending Israel into southern Lebanon (something about cedar trees mentioned in the Torah?). Lebanon is distinct from other middle eastern countries. French and English are widely spoken. 1/3 the population is Christian. When I visited I did not see any headcovers and the fashion was very high end (well, fashion throughout the ME is very high end). Beirut was like any cosmopolitan European city. There are reports that the Lebanese government is trying to use all its diplomatic ties to get US troops to provide civilian protection. Any chance this might happen? Is Israel using the cover of Iran to take the land they want from Lebanon? or how else does this resolve?
