Democracy only works within a set of specific parameters.  Otherwise, see our current situation :)

China is a wonderful country and Asia as a whole culturally is wonderful but so different than Western ways.  It's not that one is better than the other but they differ.

On the whole, what modern China has done is they've taken the "best" of what a democratic society can be ideally and combined it with a structured government approach that oversees its progress.  For many Americans this is not freedom but from a logical and pragmatic perspective, it's the most realistic and intelligent path to move forward.  Democracy is a double edged sword like freedom - there is no freedom that liberates and unless it can be enjoyed.  Americans put freedom on a pedestal as a principal but freedom is never free.
