We did a tour once about 12 years ago and they were proudly showing us how the third graders were grinding away making Excel spreadsheets and PowerPoint decks. I like a good PowerPoint as much as the next person, but it just seemed like too much of the wrong thing for that age. I’m curious to hear about others’ experiences.
Thank you for sharing this info. My firm could use some of those third graders as summer interns. I just let our recruiting team know about this untapped source of new hires.
My kids have made fun of my PowerPoint based job for years. My older son goes to a Top 30 school and is a liberal arts major. Guess what he did at his first paid job in college....mostly spreadsheets and slidemaking! In their elementary school, kids used the Google equivalent of PowerPoint all the time. As with the grownup version, using slides rather than a text document implies that more work has been done and that it is elegantly summarized. So it covers over lack of intellectual depth very nicely. For little kids, I think slides help them visualize information flow better than crafting prose. It's easy for the teacher to create a project template and let the kids populate it with their own work. And it teaches the important white collar life skill of choosing visual/graphical elements to illustrate points. Theoretically school is training for work. It doesn't seem crazy to me to see those connections in early elementary.
