I was born in 1970 and remember watching episodes of the tv show on rerun a few times as a young kid with my mom and not thinking much of it. Then sometime in high school for whatever reason I rented the original movie (VCR rental shop!) and thought that was very good. If I recall, the movie was romantic but the tv show was more played for laughs? I remember telling a friend of mine that it was a great classic romance, and she became lowkey obsessed with it. Watching it many times. Having sleepover watch parties. Declaring that she was saving herself for a sea captain ghost lover. If I recall, the movie has the widow asking the ghost, "Why did you choose to haunt?" For some reason that line always stuck with me. Like, yeah, ghosts have agency too, and haunting is a choice.
Correct, the movie is a classic romantic drama and the sitcom is precisely that—a comedy. I googled the movie and it’s widely regarded as a classic love story beautifully portrayed through romantic dialogue. There is no kissing, yet the story evokes a great deal of love and passion. I’m just starting the second episode of the sitcom. It’s a silly, fun show just as I remembered. It’s akin to Bewitched in terms of vibe.
