McPS did a presentation to the board saying they would do this in 2024. And they didn’t. I predict in the middle of 2027 they will present a half cooked proposal for public comment. And then say it can’t go forward because they received “complaints” from the community, even if the majority of parents want to have a virtual learning plan for snow emergencies. Because it’s better for McPS staff to have an extra week of snow day holidays than to have to work like the rest of Marylanders.
This has nothing to do with staff and everything to do with even if we send every kid home with a Chromebook, they don’t all get online. Why? Because if they don’t want to, their parents don’t make them. Because they don’t have good WiFi at their home. Because they are living in an apartment with 3 other families and it’s chaotic and they can’t hear. They have trouble logging in (hello K-1st graders). There’s technical issues etc etc etc. So the teacher teaches and 1/3 of the kids need to be retaught when they get back. Bitter about teachers getting summers off? Become a teacher. It’s such a glamorous job, plenty of openings! Why don’t you sign up?
