TJ has an advanced cohort of students who are taking AP Precalculus or higher in 9th grade (many of these students chose to take Honors Geometry over the summer). These students are the only students allowed to take honors Chemistry in 9th grade, meaning they are able to take multiple AP science classes starting in 10th grade and able be able to take more advanced science offerings earlier. When it comes to college admissions into top 20 schools, particularly for any science majors, the students taking the most advanced science courses will have an advantage over students who didn’t have those opportunities. These students will also have the opportunity to have higher GPAs because they will be able to take more 5.0 weighted AP classes than their peers.

Honors Chemistry in 9th for those students was a new policy for the 2025-2026 school year. Parents of current 7th graders planning to apply to TJ should consider this when deciding on summer plans.[/quote]

My kid is at Carson and has friends in Pre Calc and the like. More power to them, I guess. Different kids, even smart kids, value different experiences. DS choose summer camp and time with friends because getting a year ahead in math to take extra classes wasn’t worth it to him. None of his friends who took summer Geometry worried about expunging the grade because they all knew the material and that they would get an A. Plenty of kids hear their friends taking the class and decide they want to take it and then are shocked t how hard it is because they don’t have the background in the material. They don’t make summer plans, start a class and realize they are in over their head, and either drop it or expunge it.

You shouldn’t take Geometry in the summer unless you know you will Ace it or be fine with a C or a B.

Lots of kids attend TJ with Algebra 2 as their starting math class, they do just fine. Some kids are making poor choices because of peer pressure to be more advanced and are working outside their abilities. No clue if OP is one of those kids or not but the boards have plenty of topics of kids taking Geometry over the summer and being shocked at how much work it is, how much the kids have to teach themselves, and how they have to drop or expunge the grade.

Just make a choice that makes sense for your kid. Some kids really want to accelerate in math, some parents really want their kids to accelerate in math. It works for some but not as many as you would think. [/quote]
