Both are great for pre-med. WashU has engineering while Emory doesn't, unless you count their joint program with Georgia Tech. WashU's quality of life is definitely better than Emory's. WashU's dorms in what they call "South 40" are luxurious and remind me of Disneyland. The campus is amazingly well-kept. When we visited both campuses, WashU made us feel more welcome than Emory. They arranged for my kid to have lunch with a current student followed by a chat with a campus staff, which Emory didn't (and no one else did, to be fair). For the ranking-obsessed, 20 is a million times smaller than 24, allowing them to say their kids attend a t20. Emory's Oxford campus is also a bit of a head-scratcher, although applicants can certainly indicate they don't want Oxford. Based on these reasons I could see why students prefer WashU over Emory. My kid would, too, if these are the only options.
I agree with quality of life part. Nice dorms, nice campus, nice food, nice many things at Washu. On the other hand, weather is better at Emory, particularly in the winter season. Oxford is more premed friendly, less weedout. The ranking observation is real. To many kids and parents, T20 is an important bragging right though there is no difference in quality of education substantively.
