Mine did both online over the summer. For them, it was far preferable than wasting an entire year on it. It also enabled them enough elective space to take both advanced language classes and 4 years of music ensembles. They actually found a few of the topics interesting, but the summer pace was just about right, and they were able to get the outside activities done on their own time, between summer jobs and activities. For my kid with inattentive ADHD, an easy, relaxed class with lots of busy work is usually a recipe for disaster. They’d been dreading having to take it during the school year. But I think the compressed summer time frame made everything feel urgent enough that they were able to get it all done, and done well. I’d say if your student needs a specific session or time, you’d need to sign up soon, to be safe.
As for slack on missed sessions: officially, there’s none. Unofficially, depends on the instructor. There was one session where we hadn’t realized until the course had already started that kid’s sleepaway counselor job would require them to miss the last synchronous Health session. The instructor said it was fine, as long as they continued to turn their assignments in on time. Made an A in the class, and it sounded like that final class was mostly addressing student questions on the remaining assignments. But the other session they took covered new material and assignments all the way up to the final synchronous online session. (Kid did say that teacher was generally better and more engaged than the other one.) So I wouldn’t go into it counting on slack being offered for missed sessions—my kid may have just gotten lucky.
