they view this and zero sum even if they don't have a kid in the same applicant pool. if their kid didn't get in three years ago, nobody ever gets in. if their kid is applying this year, they discourage others. if they can't afford it, nobody should afford it.

Yeah, there’s a lot of cope. It’s so clear that the reason people insist kids need some exceptional, unusual credential to get into top schools is because they want to be able to explain why their smart, well-rounded kid didn’t get in—it must be because schools don’t want smart, well-rounded kids! They want unicorns! No: they want all sorts of kids, and they just didn’t pick yours. That’s very hard for people to accept![/quote]
