My DS will be attending in the fall, but is unsure if he wants to join a fraternity. He is very social and concerned that he won't be able to attend parties without being part of one. This seems unlikely to me, but honestly I have no idea. Anyone with a current Wolverine who can share their experience?
It’s only about 15% of the undergrad population. It’s a huge school. He’ll be fine. Make sure he gets football student tickets. That’s the bigger social thing.
It's misleading to say that just because only 15% of the kids participate in Greek life, that the other 85% don't care about attending Greek parties. For some schools that may be correct...for others it's not correct at all if Greek life is a dominant factor in the overall social scene. Now, I get that 50% of the school may have zero interest in going to greek parties or going trying to get into bars/clubs in Ann Arbor...but if that's important to your kid and Michigan Frats are invite-only (unlike UGA where nearly anyone can just go to a Frat party), then you need to look beyond simply what %age of the school are actual members.
this is very very true. As a freshman or sophomore boy you will have limited opportunities to engage in Greek parties if you are not in a house. They don’t want unaffiliated Greek boys at their parties. They are fine with girls. Just accept the realities and know that your social life will likely entail much quieter or nerdier social encounters.
