I use hemp hearts in smoothies for my DD all the time. But I use soy milk instead of water. She is a vegetarian and a picky eater so I'm always looking for ways to up her protein, fat, and iron intakes.
OP here, I also have a vegetarian daughter and a picky daughter, although in my case they are 2 different daughters. I picked hemp milk over soy, because I feel like my vegetarian daughter needs to increase iron, more than she needs to increase protein (based on the rest of her diet, not saying this is true of everyone's vegetarian daughter) and because she's getting lots of soy protein at other parts of her day. Plus, the omega 3's in hemp. Also, homemade hemp milk is low in calcium, and calcium reduces iron absorption. So my goal is to make a smoothie with iron, and vitamin C, and serve it with other iron rich foods for breakfast, and then concentrate on calcium during the rest of the day. Not saying any of this applies to you, just what I decided when I looked at my kids' diet. My picky kid eats a ton of dairy, so not having calcium at breakfast doesn't concern me.
I don't think this hard about it TBH. DD wasn't gaining weight fast enough for her pediatrician so we started using more high calorie foods and adding protein and fat where we could. I throw hemp hearts into a bunch of stuff. They actually work best in baked goods because you can mix them in with the dry ingredients and their mildly nutty flavor blends in very well with a lot of breads and muffins. DD likes soy milk as the liquid in smoothies because it's the right level of sweetness for her. We've done all the options though: water, cows milk, pea-based milk, soy milk, oat milk. Sometimes I just use whatever we have on hand.
