https://marylandpublicschools.org/about/Documents/DCAA/SocialStudies/Framework/Grade6and7-A.pdf Has anyone actually read the new state framework? We need a strong campaign our state reps to prevent this from actually happening. It’s terrible. Check out the 3rd unit in 7th grade. How can kids comprehend this stuff when adults can’t? Our kids are about to get crushed.
It’s the most important unit in the entire course. If we don’t start teaching our kids this, we are doomed to live in J6 world permanently.
The 3rd unit covers power structures, which is indeed important. However, I would suggest that BECAUSE it is so important, that it should be taught better than this. A big part of the unit apparently talks about “democratic revolutions”, which is probably what many of the J6 rioters mistakenly imagined themselves to be engaging in. If we want to avoid a J6 world, maybe we should provide more context - like the Magna Carta, the Enlightenment, the Glorious Revolution, and especially the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Maybe if more people knew what was actually in the Constitution, they’d stop following a President who talks about abolishing parts of it that get in his way.
