What is the best clubs out there for boys U15?
It is easy to spot families new to club volleyball because they all ask the same question. That is similar to the question I asked when my DD started playing volleyball (except I was interested in the best team for girls volleyball). The answer was relatively easy to find (and it didn't change after two years of club). Nobody told me that I was asking the wrong question. I wish somebody slapped me a few years back and told me to figure out what was the best team that my DD had any chance of playing for. That advice would have saved us from a poorly planned tryout week. The answer to your question may be similarly easy to find, but it will likely be completely useless to you. Unless you use the information to avoid trying out for that club / team. You may decide to try out for the best team if your DS is very young / tall / athletic. Otherwise, try to figure out what team your DS has a realistic chance to play on. This is the million dollar question that not many families have a clear answer for.
That first year, you just want to get on a team where you are likely to get a reasonable amount of play time.
Agreed. But the way you search for that team is different at 15 than at 11. At 11 it may make sense to ask "which is the best team", but at 15 you should ask "is there any team that would accept a player with little club experience?"
11? At what age do boys start club volleyball, realistically?
I would say generally, boys start club around age 12/13. There are very few local club teams younger than 14U (cutoff date is July 1). My son played on a 14U team as a 13 y.o. (7th grader) and again as a 14 y.o. (8th grader).
I only have a DD who plays volleyball, so I don't know much about boys volleyball. Knowledge of girls volleyball helps a bit in looking up info though. According to https://advancedeventsystems.com/rankings/Male/U12/aes - there were three boys teams playing at 12U age level (they likely had 11 year olds on those teams as well). Surprisingly, no teams for 13s (there were 3 teams the year before), but then 13 teams at age 14. Clearly not as popular as girls volleyball, but boys can start playing at 11-12. We also played against girls teams that had a couple of boys (it was American if I remember correctly). Apparently they can play on girls teams up to age 13.
