I'm now wondering if it's the best financial decision to stop owning a car altogether, even though I live in the (sort of) sticks where everything commercial is at least 4 miles away and not walkable

It depends on how dependent you are on a car. I have lived without a car for years, but that is because I live in the city and can walk to the grocery store, the dentist, the doctor, the urgent care center, the gym, the library, the hardware store, etc. If I had to drive to all these things and then needed to depend on calling on an uber to get to those places, I think it would get old fast.
