If she got a 1099 instead of a w-2 then she should have filed (she would probably owe FICA but not income taxes). [/quote] OP this is correct when paid via W-2. She would not need to file. My DS was paid via 1099 as a tutor, so we filed for him to pay FICA. We had him review everything, sign, etc. because we want him to become familiar with his tax obligations and paperwork (another reason to file). As others mentioned, it's a good idea to file if your DD contributes to a Roth for the documentation.[/quote]
