Why do people say OOS is the same price as private? The sticker price for Ohio State, OOS, is $63k. The sticker price for Tufts is $93k. A family that can only send two kids to Tufts can send three kids to Ohio State. That’s a pretty big difference!
Because people frequently use Berkeley and Michigan - which are about 85k OOS - as the comps with top 25 privates and in the 30-70 range half of students at a school like Tufts (your example) receive financial aid, often bringing it in-line with schools like Ohio State (your other example). Not everyone wants to go to a big state U. Not everyone wants to go to a small private. Why does everyone act as if the only decision is ranking (unreliable) + cost (highly variable)? Some families have one kid, some two, some three. Some grandparents start college funds that grow considerably from birth to SAT. Everyone is in a different situation, but for some reason people act as if ranking (unreliable) + cost (highly variable) are constants.
