Here's a recipe: https://alumnae.mtholyoke.edu/blog/deacon-porters-hat-recipes/ Does it really need to be a hat? Because hermit cookies would also fit the bill. I also have a molasses bar recipe from Yankee magazine that I love. That seems to be the spirit of this silly thing. New Englander here.
The Deacon Porter hat is a steamed pudding in a conical fez shape. Nothing like hermit cookies or molasses bars. It's going to be comparable to a moist cake. As for the PP, steamed puddings are surprisingly light and delicious. Don't knock it till you've tried it. What I find intriguing about this recipe is that it doesn't have ginger yet you'd think it would be perfect for ginger.
