I foster for a rescue that pulls from local shelters and one in Arkansas that is high kill. Rural shelters are generally high kill and the dogs run out of time quicker. The rescue will bring them here for higher chances at adoption. It’s sad all around for all the dogs in shelters. What should be banned outright are puppy mills and breeding for profit.
Woah. I agree with everything but your last sentence. ONLY breeders should be allowed. Dogs aren’t nature vs nurture. They have very firm natures and people need working and service dogs that are bred that way. Even companion dogs should come from breeders too. Grandma doesn’t need a pit mix to cuddle with. We need mandatory spay and neuter laws unless you have a license. And there should be fines and penalties.
NP. I agree with you re: mandatory spay/neuter, but most people breeding purebreds for show, service dogs, etc are not clearing much of a profit, if any. It's a hobby that might pay for itself most years. People breeding high volume as a commercial enterprise are a problem and should be banned.
