That article is all over the place and definitely contains incorrect information. (Honestly, it sounds like RFK Jr. drivel.) All mammals have e. coli in their digestive tracts. Only a few strains can make us sick, the rest are harmless. Most UTIs are caused by e. coli that inadvertently makes its way to the bladder via hygiene practices. This is why women are encouraged to wipe from front to back. Bacteria in meat processing typically occurs through poor slaughtering practices where the meat gets exposed to the intestines of the mammal. It has nothing to do with the zip code of the grocery store. Poultry does not carry e. coli unless it somehow is exposed to the intestines of a mammal. In the end, any correlation to socioeconomic status and UTIs probably involves hygiene practices more than anything else.
Read the article from CIDRAP. It’s well done. Poorer zip codes had poorly packaged chicken that was more likely to leak. Not only was the infection caused by preparing or eating chicken, but eating it recently. FYI, being poor does not mean being dirty.
