The National Guard can’t decide where they’ll be deployed.  They probably expected to be sent to disaster zones to provide aid to their fellow Americans.  Trump may be looking at them as his toy soldiers to use according to his whim, but anybody with an ounce of sense should recognize that they’re sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, husbands and wives, mothers and fathers, whose lives are being disrupted for an assignment they didn’t ask for and don’t want.

[b]Moreover, from a strategic point of view, it makes more sense to treat them as “one of us” rather than “the enemy”.  If (and I fear likely when) Trump orders them to attack Americans, we want them to have an instinctive recoil from attacking their FELLOW Americans, and not as taking action against self/declared enemies.  Our best hope of the military viewing as  individuals they want to side with and not as the enemy is if we treat them as individuals who are on our side and not as the enemy.  If ever there was a case to employ the golden rule, this is it.[/b]

I’m old enough to remember when the Berlin Wall fell and how easily the night that was a jubilant turning point for freedom for Eastern Europe could have been a bloody massacre, if not for the individual decisions of the border guards.  That was just one instance in the long history of mankind where individual soldiers had to make individual decisions on whether to follow orders with lethal consequences or to follow their individual consciences and spare lives. When the time comes, a soldier may not have time to deliberate but have to decide in a moment what their actions will be, which will be influenced by their life experiences.  If there is any hope to influence them, how we treat them now, before the crisis, may be our best opportunity.[/quote]
