Here’s the community letter that came out of Northwood: Community Update- 9/11/25 Good afternoon Northwood community: Please click here to see an update regarding our incidents today, Thursday, September 11, 2025. The message is also copied below to assist with multiple translation options. I want to send a very special recognition to our Gladiator students who did a phenomenal job during the complexities of today's events! Good afternoon Northwood community: The purpose of this letter is to update you on two incidents that occurred at Northwood High School today, Thursday, September 11, 2025. We want to stress that while initial reports were very serious, our partners in Montgomery County Police and Montgomery County security were able to lower the severity of the incidents. At the beginning of our lunch period, we received a call from a community partner who reported that they witnessed individuals placing a firearm in a car. An immediate emergency call was made by both our community partners and Northwood High School and we entered a SECURE status. Montgomery County police were quickly able to identify the individuals, three Northwood students who were done with their school day, and confirmed the reported weapon was a water gun. While we are very thankful this initial incident was not as serious as reported, the action of these students is very serious and will be handled via the Montgomery County Student Code of Conduct. Concurrent with the initial call, we received a report that a community member witnessed students with a firearm in the building. This initiated our LOCKDOWN status. Once again, our partners in Montgomery County police and MCPS security located the students and identified the item as an airsoft gun (BB gun). Once again, although this was not as serious as reported, the actions of these students are very serious and will be handled via the Montgomery County Student Code of Conduct. We were able to lift the lockdown and resume normal operations, including after school activities. The fear, harm, and trauma caused by serious incidents, even if determined not to be as serious, cannot be ignored. Northwood and MCPS staff will be available beginning tomorrow, Friday, September 12, 2025. Additionally, we will update all members of the community of our next steps and opportunities moving forward.
