From one try out we did:
About 20 kids showed up
A lot of kids knew each other which can be intimidating for newer kids
Did a bunch of drills and conditioning first to see who was in shape. Then went into 3v3 and then 5v5.
They did tell kids who made the team and those who had to come back again.
At another try out at a well known upper tier team, over 50 kids showed up. Half way thru they cut half the kids who they knew had no chance, then at the end of the try out cut everyone else who didn't make the few spots open.
Most established teams have the core coming back every year who are pretty much guaranteed a spot on the team, so in reality there are only a few spots open for those kids who have moved on, don't want to play anymore, etc..
