Enjoy Pittsburgh - at that age, I'd try to find a spot in one of the city neighborhoods versus in the burbs. Shadyside, Squirrel Hill, Lawrenceville, Bloomfield, South Side - flats or slopes, etc. There's a bunch of other neighborhoods as well that are great for younger adults. Might be a chance to find a short term rental to check out one of those neighborhoods and get a feel for things. I was just there for a week to visit my parents who live in a suburb that borders the city. South Hills area - thing that always amazes me is that stuff can be only 7 miles away, but it still take 20 to 30 minutes to get there because the road infrastructure ain't the greatest.
Our Pitt grad found a job in Pittsburgh, as did 2 of his college friends, and they now rent a row house in South Side that's awesome. One block of the strip with restaurants and shops, but their block is quiet. He could probably find a sublet through Dec if he wanted from some student who is abroad - look on FB
