It's mostly preppies from the suburbs of Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati and especially Chicago. The academics are a bit stronger than the sky-high acceptance rate suggests, and business is one of the better programs. Greek life dominates the social scene. Dorms are average, but most only live in them freshman year. Sophomores and some juniors live in their fraternity/sorority houses, and most juniors and seniors live in off-campus housing. Not a huge rah-rah school when it comes to sports and DEFINITELY not a "new ivy" or "public ivy." Some dildo wrote a book in the 1980s calling it that and the school has been clinging to it ever since.
I looked it up after we toured, and this is correct-- Miami was listed as a public ivy in a book from 1986, and they still mention it in their tour etc. The colleges in Ohio have drastically changed since then. Ohio State used to be a fallback school, and Gordon Gee completely changed Ohio State and the college rankings in Ohio. Miami used to be the hardest school to get into in Ohio, and now it's not even the top two- it's behind Ohio State and the University of Cincinnati. My DC toured, and we all wanted to love Miami. Unfortunately, coming from the DMV, she wanted a school with more diversity. She and her classmates all seemed to want to avoid Ohio generally as well, to be honest. Also- the campus is very Greek, but they don't have sorority houses due to an alumni leaving a large sum of money with stipulations that they were never allowed to have them. Instead, they have large suites inside dorm buildings.
