It's been challenging. I didn't expect to be back on the job market at 50. I've been doing basically the same thing for 20 years, something that's very rare in my non-DMV major metropolitan area. As I haven't found a single open job opening that's squarely in my lane, I've been pivoting and applying for jobs that are rather different from my experience. I feel fortunate that I've had interviews for half a dozen jobs, even 2nd/3rd rounds, but haven't received any offers. My working theory is that they have other candidates that aren't a risk and need far less training. TBH, I wouldn't hire me for several of these jobs as the substantive area AND the day-to-day processes are unlike anything I have experience with. I can hope that I click so well with a hiring manager that they decide to take a chance on me. I've had ZERO luck with any fully remote positions - I've only had interviews with local organizations. The other problem is all the jobs that pay $60-80k. I was a GS-14/10. I just can't make that work. I made $120k in 2001 and $93k at my first federal job in 2004. I've set my floor at $100k, but goodness $130k+ would be better. I'm very fortunate in that I took VERA so my health insurance should be secure and I'll be getting a small pension starting next year. I've been looking for 3-4 months and seem to always have something in the works, either an upcoming interview or post-interview awaiting news. I think I'll struggle more if I go few months without any nibbles. On the positive side, I've encountered plenty of people that want to help former feds. I've had to get over myself and ask them for help, and they've invariably been eager to do so.
