One particularly disappointing moment was at the end-of-season crew celebration. The girls coach delivered a heartfelt and thoughtful tribute to the senior girls, while the boys coach didn’t offer a single word of acknowledgment for the senior boys. Even if public speaking isn’t his strength, there were other options — for example, having the girls coach recognize all seniors on behalf of the team. The absence of any recognition sent a demoralizing message to the boys, many of whom had committed years to the sport.

It’s no surprise the boys team is dwindling in both size and spirit. Without strong leadership and appreciation, it's hard to keep athletes engaged — let alone inspire future growth.
