I’m not a Trump fan and I didn’t vote for him. However, I’m not sure where you want the US to be politically on the international scene and at home. Should we put our mask on before helping others? We are in serious debt. The aid buys us influence abroad but we are losing ground to China. So, maybe they should put up the money. Where are the Europeans on this? Australia? Etc. We pay for the aid, so other developed countries fund things like college education for their people. If the US takes in many refugees and poor immigrants (setting aside those who have means) and provides them government assistance, then maybe we should be giving away less money abroad. Something to think about especially when Democrats are back in office. If we want socialism, the. We need to stop sending money overseas and pay off our debts.
This aid doesn’t cost us much— most people wildly overstate how much we spend on it— the tax cut on overtime and other tax cuts for the rich are going to add a lot more to the debt than this and what will have to show for it? Europe spends a lot more per capita on aid than we do btw. And in case you missed the news lately we aren’t letting any refugees in now (unless you count white farmers from South Africa)— aid like this can actually help stabilize countries and reduce refugees. Trying to balance the budget on the backs of the poor, whether here or abroad, is like telling a millienial to afford a house by not buying avocado toast— it’s pointless and economically senseless but makes some people feel good.
What about China?
