Like any beach town there are going to be tacky souvenir shops regardless of where you choose... but some towns on Cape are better than others. Favorite towns to walk through - Provincetown, Chatham, Wellfleet and Osterville (mentioned last only because it's small). More broadly speaking - Provincetown is the best Cape town IMO. Lots of great food, adorable, interesting + walkable town, biking the sand dunes... it's got a ton to offer. It's also close to Wellfleet and attractions like the Cape Cod National seashore. If you're driving though- it's at the farthest tip of the Cape and easily the longest drive. I would take a ferry from Boston to P-town if you didn't drive from DC, then rent a car on Cape to explore. If you're driving from Boston, Falmouth checks a box and is close, but you're on the opposite tip of the Cape and exploring the rest of the Cape is going to be a drive. You can hop on the ferry to Martha's Vineyard next door in Woods Hole which is nice. There are stretches of tackiness and touristy shops all up and down the two main roads - Rt 28 Rt 6 - throughout Cape Cod. Yarmouth and Dennis are probably the biggest offenders, but all of the towns (including Yarmouth and Dennis) have plenty of beautiful areas and homes and beaches. Hyannis is the commercial center of Cape Cod. I probably wouldn't direct you there but if you find a nice house there it's a good home base and very close to Osterville + Barnstable village and pretty accessible for exploring. Another plus is it's easy to hop on a ferry and head over to Nantucket for a day if you're so inclined. Chatham is very cute + you might see some sharks. Harwich + Orleans are others worth a look. Good luck with college visits - we did ours last year and Boston is an amazing college town with so many to consider!
