I asked AI for verified cases of people impersonating ICE agents, and these are some of the examples it gave. Clearly, it's not just WP "scum" attempts to "enrage its leftist readership" that's at play here. When you have an entire agency hiding their faces with masks, wearing plain clothes, and not wearing or immediately displaying their badges, it's logical that there will be some people impersonating them because it's so easy to do so.

*South Carolina (January 29, 2025): Sean-Michael Johnson, 33, was charged with kidnapping and impersonating a police officer after detaining a group of Latino men along a Charleston County road. He allegedly presented himself as an ICE agent, with the incident recorded by a victim, showing Johnson saying, “You all got caught! Where are you from, Mexico?”

*North Carolina (January 26, 2025): Carl Thomas Bennett, 37, was arrested for impersonating an ICE officer and sexually assaulting a woman at a Motel 6 in Raleigh. He allegedly threatened to deport her if she did not comply, using a business card with a badge to support his claim. Bennett faces charges including kidnapping and second-degree forcible rape.

*Pennsylvania (February 1, 2025): Aidan Steigelmann, a 22-year-old Temple University student, was charged with conspiracy to impersonate a public servant after he and two others, wearing shirts labeled “Police” and “ICE,” attempted to enter a university residence hall and disrupted a nearby cookie shop. *Florida (April 10, 2025): Latrance Battle, 52, was arrested for impersonating an ICE agent to kidnap her ex-boyfriend’s wife. She allegedly wore a shirt with “ICE” printed on it and showed a sheriff’s office business card, attempting to detain the woman before fleeing to Alabama. Charges include kidnapping, robbery, and impersonating a law enforcement officer.

*Florida (April 2025): José Juan Lopez, 23, was arrested in Indiantown for impersonating an ICE agent. He chased two Latino migrants in a van, demanding they prove their immigration status and threatening deportation. The incident occurred at 3 a.m., and Lopez was identified by the Martin County Sheriff’s Office as having no affiliation with ICE.

*Utah (March 2025): Rony Hernandez-Morales, 36, a twice-deported Honduran national, was arrested by ICE for impersonating an ICE officer. He was charged with impersonating a peace officer and identity fraud, seen wearing an ICE t-shirt and a badge.

*California (March 2025): At El Sancho Loco Taqueria in Newbury Park, a customer was reported wearing a jacket labeled “ICE Immigration,” described as an attempt to intimidate the immigrant community.
